SIU students, staff plant trees for Arbor Day
CARBONDALE -- The SIU campus will be a little greener thanks to some students and staff.
A group planted 12 trees around the parking lot between Thompson Point and the Communications Building Tuesday.
The effort is part of the university's "Tree Campus USA" designation, something the Arbor Day Foundation gives out to schools that put a lot of effort into beautifying the campus.
"When you're driving past here and all you see is just a concrete jungle and a maze of parking lots and buildings, the trees help to break that up and bring some fresh air to campus, literally and figuratively," SIU student Kevin McIntyre said.
"Most of (the volunteers) have never had any experience planting trees so they got to be hands on and learn the proper techniques, hopefully, of putting these things into the ground," SIU superintendent of grounds Dave Tippy said.
