'Meet & Teach' nonprofit serves youth globally

CARBONDALE -- An SIU Ph.D. student is using his nonprofit to serve the youth, both oversees in South Africa and throughout Illinois.

CEO Evan Brown founded Meet & Teach after getting inspired while he was in Cape Town, South Africa filming a documentary soon after getting his master's degree at SIU. The nonprofit works to provide disadvantaged youth with educational hands-on workshops and sports camps.

"While I was out there, a lot of the kids were very interested in using my camera equipment so I was like, 'Wow, it would be cool to teach them,'" Brown said.

And that's exactly what the Chicago-native is doing now.

"So that's when I got the idea to have educational workshops that provides opportunities and access for disadvantaged youth," Brown said.

A year and a half later, Brown is getting his Ph.D. in Educational Administration and working to advance education globally through Meet & Teach.

"It's very touching, it's just hard to explain, I wish everybody could actually get the opportunity to go over there because the trip is definitely a humbling experience," Brown said.

Volunteers like Christian Thompson, getting his master's and also studying education at SIU, are getting those opportunities.

"Not just having our education and background, but if we can't use those to actually help other people, to help them actually find their selves and use other resources, then what are we doing here?" Thompson said.

Whether it's through hands-on workshops or basketball camps, Brown and his team are touching hundreds of children, and striving to bring different groups of people together.

"You can't really get a full perspective of your learning experience until you actually go out somewhere else and experience how cultures are different," Thompson said.

The nonprofit is expanding with the Boys and Girls Club and will hold a program for the youth this summer in Carbondale.

"What I see when I speak to them is a lot of talent ready to explode and come out and show the world," Brown said.

They're also looking for volunteers to join them this December in Cape Town, South Africa. For more information, visit herehttps://www.meetandteach.org/
