Perry County fight potentially blinds man

Posted: Updated:

PERRY CO.-- What looks like a long stretch of back road is a now the scene of a crime that landed one man in a St. Louis hospital.

It all happened Saturday afternoon on the Swanwick-Rice Road, just west of the small Perry County community of Swanwick.

A witness to the fight wanted to remain anonymous because she feared the attacker might come back.

She said the victim was coming from the east and stopped his pickup truck in the road. That's when the other car came from the west and they both got out, went to the ditch.

"He finally got up and gave him a swift kick to the head," she said, "Then he got in his car and left."

That wasn't all. The attacker not only beat the victim, he also gouged his eyes out.

That's when I realized the man couldn't see so I called the sheriff's department and notified them and told them they needed to get someone here immediately,” the witness said.

Perry County Sheriff Steve Bareis did confirm that the man sustained eye injuries substantial enough to airlift the man from the scene.

The Perry County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident, but would not confirm that they had any leads on suspects.
