Chamber of Commerce opposes funds transfer proposal

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce joins several lawmakers in voicing opposition to a funds transfer proposal by the SIU Board of Trustees.

They're are calling for more time in regards to a proposal b to move $5.1 Million dollars of state funding from SIU Carbondale to SIU Edwardsville.

The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce opposes the idea. Interim director Jennifer Olson says it could stifle the city's efforts to grow.

The chamber sent an opposition letter to the board of trustees citing a 2011 study, that said for every dollar of state funding, seven dollars would be spent annually. Olson says a cut over $5 million dollars could damage the local economy by nearly $39 million in revenue.

"That's a lot to absorb and its going to be challenging to make good progress if there has to be another round of cuts," said Olson.

SIUC Chancellor Carlo Montemagno said in a blog post that the university had already cut over 31 million in funding since 2014 and more than 5 million in additional cuts would be equal to 110 layoffs.

"It's not just the faculty and staff, it's all the local vendors who do business on campus or provide a service on campus and then their suppliers. I mean it really just ripples out," said Olson.

If passed, the proposal could move more than 25 million dollars from Carbondale to Edwardsville over the next four years.
