JONESBORO-- It's a time to honor those people you may hear, but never see working to make sure your 911 call is handled correctly.

Mike Dammerman, he's been working for the Union County Sheriff's office for more than 24 years, he says every day is hectic.

"It's kind of a sit and wait game.. when the phones start ringing we have to jump into action," said Dammerman.

The sheriff, Scott Harvel, says Dammerman and his colleagues play an important role in the office.

Harvel said, "You know there often a person that's heard and not seen so that is very critical in this type of work to be able to communicate well-- and to relay the information that you have obtained."

Telecommunicators Week started in 1981 in California. It was recognized by the U.S. Congress in 1991 as a week to thank emergency dispatchers.
