"The Big Event" - WSIL-TV 3 Southern Illinois

"The Big Event"

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON COUNTY -- As SIU is a major part of the southern Illinois community-- the University prompts students to give back in what is called "The Big Event."

This is the second year S-I-U has hosted the event.
The idea for the event came from Texas A and M.

The day included traditional volunteer work like picking up trash --but also included some more unique work such as making cards for veterans or care packages for first responders.

Students who got an early start to the day yesterday had to face a little snow, -- but they say it's worth it to volunteer in their new home.

The day also proved to be a big help for places struggling to find workers..

Event organizers say they hope the event continues to grow.
