CARTERVILLE-- April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Poshard says many counties in southern Illinois have child abuse rates that are at least twice as high as the national average. Friday's event brought together child welfare agencies with the state, county, and city leaders to bring awareness to child abuse and neglect cases.

Williamson County State's Attorney, Brandon Zanotti, addressed another issue putting children at risk a practice known as co-sleeping.
Already this year -- he's seen 3 infants die while sharing a bed with a parent.

Zanotti says these types of deaths are totally preventable.

The agencies hope that by raising awareness; more people will step up to help end child abuse. If you suspect a child is being abused -- they ask you to call the Childhelp abuse hotline and report it.
