Illinois village bans assault weapons

DEERFIELD - A village in Illinois is taking a drastic step to curb violence-- it's banning some semi-automatic firearms.

The Deerfield Village board unanimously voted to ban A-R 15 rifles and high capacity magazines.

The ordinance becomes official June 13th, and after that date citizens who still own banned weapons could be fined $1,000 per day.

The Illinois State Rifle Association, along with plaintiffs Daniel Easterday and the Second Amendment Foundation have filed suit against the village of Deerfield.

The groups contend that the village's recently passed "assault weapons" ban infringes on the rights of law-abiding citizens to acquire and keep firearms of their choosing.
