An important month-long campaign begins -- to bring awareness to Child Abuse.

CARTERVILLE--   You may have noticed blue cut-outs of children dotting the landscape. Caritas Family Solutions has started its annual blue ribbon campaign. It's in support of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Jessica Hutton, from Caritas, says-- many people don't understand the different kinds of abuse.

Hutton said, "I think a lot of people think child abuse just physical abuse--but the misconception is that our kids in our care actually go through neglect as well."

She believes bringing awareness to the problem --by putting up these blue kids can help.

The blue kids started from the blue ribbon campaign that began in 1989 as a woman's tribute to her grandson. The ribbons symbolized the bruises her grandson experienced. He died at the hands of his mother's abusive partner.

"It's really heartbreaking to know kids do go through child abuse especially me being a mom for the first time this year," said Hutton.

According to a recent report from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services; there were more than 9-thousand child abuse cases in 2017. And--Those were the reported cases.

Hutton says; if you have a feeling something is wrong, you can report it anonymously.

If you want to participate in showing child abuse prevention on; April 6th is also “Wear Blue Day”, so this is an opportunity to wear blue in recognition and support of abused children in our state and country.
