Southern Illinois AIDS Walk this Saturday

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Organizers hope for a big crowd at the 18th annual Southern Illinois AIDS Walk.

The walk will be held this Saturday at 11 a.m. and will start at the SIUC Newman Center, which is located at 715 S. Washington Street in Carbondale.

Donations collected from the walk will help buy grocery store gift cards for low-income households in southern Illinois that are affected by HIV and AIDS.

Father Joseph Brown and Travis Tucker are honorary chairs for the walk.

Brown said the walk makes a positive difference in people's lives.

"I see the AIDS walk reaching out to people, making them aware and helping out families, the people carrying the illness and the general community. It's all been a very positive statement," said Brown.

Prior to the walk, there will be a health fair at 10 a.m.

Free rapid HIV testing will also be available.

Donations can be made online at CarbondaleAIDSWalk.org, or can be sent to the AIDS Walk c/o Wally Paynter, 908 Oak Street Suite B, Carmi, IL 62821.
