Johnston City hosts gun raffle fundraiser for fireworks show

Posted: Updated:

JOHNSTON CITY -- Johnston City leaders are hosting a gun raffle to raise money for the city's Fourth of July fireworks.

Officials are selling 150 tickets at $10 each. The winner will get a $500 voucher to go toward the purchase of a gun.

Despite the national debate surrounding guns, leaders stand by their decision to host the raffle.

"Most people in southern Illinois are very gun friendly and I'm one of them," mayor Jim Mitchell said.

"You can get any kind of firearm you want as far as home protection," Johnston City police chief William Stark said. "As a police chief, I know how important it is to protect yourself and having a firearm in your home is one way to do that."

Stark said he expects the fireworks show to cost $25,000 and the gun raffle will only cover a portion of the cost.

He said they've already sold two thirds of the tickets available.

The drawing will take place April 10.
