Southern Illinois Reads Festival

Posted: Updated:

DU QUOIN -- Dozens of children and their parents gathered in Du Quoin today to celebrate reading.

The Illinois Reads Book Festival brought in several authors from Illinois to share their experience.
Readers of all ages were able to ask questions during panels, hear readings from those authors, and more.
Organizers say they hope to encourage families to read together.

"Literacy is so important for a family, being able to sit down and read with your child every night. They're going to remember that forever and they're going to cherish those memories and those conversations are so rich with your child when you're discussing a book." Du Quoin Elementary Principal Diana Rea said.

Rea says literacy is a priority with the school district, creating programs like one school, one book, where students and teachers participate in a school wide book club.
