Group holds "Hike with a Homeless Dog" event

JACKSON COUNTY -- Over 3 million dogs are taken into shelters every year in the United States, half of which are euthanized, but one local program is hoping to help shelter dogs find a new home.

Hoping to repeat last October when dozens showed up at Giant City State Park for "Hike with A Homeless Dog," volunteers with Wright-Way Rescue hope to reduce the number of dogs put down in the Midwest.

The shelter saved 99 percent of its animals in 2016. That's three times higher than the national average.

Partnering with state park officials, volunteers hope to provide a fun day while also raising awareness about what they do.

"We pull a lot of dogs from humane societies and animal controls and if they didn't have a resource like us those dogs wouldn't have another option to get into a home." said one volunteer.

Organizers hope events like these not only reach out to the community but help these dogs find forever homes.
