SIU raises more than $400k on 'Day of Giving'

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- March 7 marks the second annual "SIU Day of Giving" fundraiser.

The school raised more than $400 thousand as of Wednesday night. In 2017, they raised more than $340 thousand.

Whether it's a chunk of change, or hundreds of dollars, SIUC school leaders say every bit counts.

"If you give $5, $10, $100, $100,000, it all comes together," said Chancellor Carlo Mantemagno. "This is about the community coming together to help support initiatives for the university and today it's about sharing the experience and giving the gift of experience."

The money raised will support everything from scholarships to program enhancements, athletics and more.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for people who have either gone to SIU or who may support SIU and live in the community as a way to give back for students like me and students all across campus,” said Kyle Whittington, an SIU Medical Student.

This campaign comes at a time where enrollment numbers are lower than previous years, which means fewer tuition dollars.

"Whenever you lose money in either of those areas, it's difficult to completely replace it," said Jim Salmo, the SIU Foundation CEO.

But, Salmo says thanks to donors, the school has an increase in cash gifts and pledges that help make up for it. They already have $13.4 million, according to Salmo.

"People are really stepping up and they're really coming together to help keep the university moving forward," Salmo said, adding social media played a big role in getting the word out this year.
