Police investigating possible threat against Mt. Vernon High School

WSIL -- Police in Mt. Vernon have confirmed they are investigating a possible social media threat made against the high school. 

Mt. Vernon Police Chief Chris Deichman confirmed to News 3 they are investigating. He said given the climate of school violence around the country, they are taking the threat seriously. 

Police learned about the threat this afternoon and are working with the school administration.  

Chief Deichman says they will increase police presence at the school on Thursday. 

Mt. Vernon Township High School released the following message on its Facebook page:

Please note that the administration and staff of Mount Vernon Township High School have received information regarding a possible threat of violence at our high school.
We are actively pursuing the information received and are presently attempting to confirm the reliability of the sources. School administration and staff have remained on campus this evening working directly with both the City and County authorities to evaluate the situation and take the necessary actions to assure the utmost safety of both our students and staff.
We take all threats of this nature very seriously and especially in light of the recent events. Please be assured that Mount Vernon Township High School will always apply an abundance of caution in these situations.
