HARRISBURG -- Harrisburg Mayor John McPeek is calling for tougher penalties after police responded to a shooting Saturday morning, sending one man to jail.

"It has to start with our court system, our judicial system, get these people off the street. If it takes locking them up, lock them up," McPeek said. "I know the citizens of Harrisburg and the citizens of the county are getting fed up with it."

Harrisburg police, assisted by the Saline County Sheriff's Department, Eldorado police and Illinois State Police, are investigating the incident.

"The citizens that live in that part of the town are getting fed up, they're scared, and they don't know what to expect every night and it's getting out of hand," McPeek said. "We are definitely going to push to get these people off the streets of Harrisburg."
