MOUNDS -- A Southern Illinois Veteran hit a huge milestone Friday and dozens of people showed up to help him celebrate.

World War II veteran Henry Schnaare means a lot to the Mounds community.

"He's  friends to everyone," said Skeeter Harrell. "He doesn't know an enemy."

She said says Henry's always putting smiles on people's faces, so the community wanted to return the favor on his special day.

You see, Henry turned 100 Friday, though he's sure he looks two decades younger.

"Well it don't seem like it," he said. "It don't seem like you're that old. I don't believe it."

From friends and family to community members looking to honor one of America's heroes, more than 60 showed up to celebrate Henry's big day at the Smiles Senior Center, and he just couldn't stop smiling.

"It makes you feel wanted," Henry said.

For friends, the celebration was all about showing Henry, 100 years young, what he means to the entire Mounds Community.

"Henry treats you like you're one of he most special people when he's talking to you so he makes you feel special," said Buddy Walls. "Henry earlier told me he said I didn't know so many people knew me and I said well Henry, this is a testimony to how many people love you."

And what he'll mean for years to come.

"He's just so special and I hope he's here another 100 years," Harrell said.
