SIU tops Valparaiso, extends win streak to five

CARBONDALE - The basketball Salukis welcomed valley newcomer Valparaiso on Saturday night.

The teams battled through a close first half.  Valpo never led by more than seven the Salukis only led by four points or less.

The Crusaders went into the half leading 31-25.

Valparaiso got off to a good start in the second taking an eight point lead four different times.

Southern continued to chip away and retook the lead with less than nine minutes to play.

The teams went back and forth until the final minute.

It was 59-59 with 44 seconds to play when Armon Fletcher knocks down a three from the corner to give the Dawgs the lead.  They take it 65-59.

Kavion Pippen led the way for the Salukis with 21 points.  Fletcher added 12.

Southern travels to Illinois State on Thursday night.
