Old MVTHS Set For Demolition

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- The old Mt. Vernon Township High School is set to come down. Thursday, crews set up a fence around the buildings and inside, took down some of the last things needed to be removed from one of the gyms.

The auditorium and gym will be the first buildings torn down followed by Buildings A, B, C and F.

"We've got some people here doing air sampling," explained Brian Rightnowar, director of facilities. "Monday, the asbestos people will come in and start removing asbestos from the big gym, the auditorium, and the house."

School leaders say it's been an emotional process for many residents and former students with dozens stopping by to take pictures before the demolition.

A contract for demolition and asbestos abatement was rewarded to Earth Services of Benton. The cost of the project is $877,603.
