Democratic governor candidates participate in debate at SIU

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Six major Democratic gubernatorial candidates participated in a forum at the SIUC Student Center Tuesday night.

There was tension and laughter as Daniel Biss, Bob Daiber, Tio Hardiman, Chris Kennedy, Robert Marshall and J.B. Pritzker participated in the debate, all hoping to become the next governor of Illinois.

Hundreds of people from across southern Illinois listened to the candidates as they weighed in on various issues. Some attacked their opponents, some attacked Governor Bruce Rauner and President Donald Trump.

Other topics that came up included boosting the economy, decriminalizing marijuana, standing up for the middle class, controversial campaign ads and funding schools.

This was the second debate of the democratic primary, held one week after the first one in northern Illinois.

The primary elections will take place in March and the general election will take place in November.
