Attorney General candidate tours southern Illinois

MARION -- A man attempting to become Illinois' next Attorney General promises to represent all of Illinois.

State Sen. Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) stopped in Cairo and Marion Monday.

Raoul held a meet and greet at 17th Street BBQ with plenty of Democrats singing his praises.

"He never turned us down one time," former SIU president Glenn Poshard said, recalling the times he worked with Raoul. "He has been there for us just like he's been there for his own district."

Raoul started his day visiting the troubled housing projects in Cairo and he said the Attorney General can play a bigger role helping the town.

"What I saw there was just unconscionable and we need to advocate for the economic development in every corner of our state," Raoul said. "Cairo is definitely a reflection for that kind of advocacy."

As a cancer survivor, Raoul also plans to advocate for better access to health care.

"Advocacy for better health care, it's life or death," Raoul said.

And he said he'll fight against what he calls Gov. Bruce Rauner's anti-union agenda.

"Attorney General's have to collaborate together to fight policies that attack organized labor and the middle class at large," Raoul said.

Raoul said he's confident that despite a crowded field running for Attorney General, he'll come out on top.

He's one of eight Democrats running to replace Lisa Madigan, who is retiring at the end of her term. Two Republicans are also running.
