SIU senior guard volunteers to help cancer survivors

CARBONDALE - Friday night is the SIU women's blackout cancer game.

Each Saluki will wear a jersey with the name of someone who has battled cancer.

Senior Kylie Giebelhausen will wear the Strong Survivors jersey, but her connection with the Strong Survivors program goes beyond wearing the jersey.  Giebelhausen volunteers as a student staff member with the program

"It makes me feel good that I'm helping out, it gives me somewhere to volunteer,"  Giebelhausen said.  "It gives me experience working with other people."

Strong Survivors is a free program run by the SIU department of Kinesiology and SIH. The goal of the program is to use exercise as a therapeutic tool to help cancer survivors and caregivers with their recovery process.

DR. PHIL ANTON: "She's the one that's on the front lines doing the work that we do with strong survivors," explained Dr. Phil Anton, the exercise science director for Strong Survivors.  "Helping our participants to improve their health, improve their quality of life."

Giebelhausen works with Michael Dahlen, a prostate cancer survivor, and Katrin Schurz, a breast cancer survivor.  Both are in remission and say the Saluki senior has been a huge part in their recovery process.

"She is wonderful, I really like to do the workout with her," said Schurz.  "She knows what to do and she does what is most important for me right now."

"Obviously, the physical: you're going to improve as time goes on." added Dahlen.  "Mentally, it's nice to know you've got somebody that you're not alone.  Nobody wants to fight cancer without any friends."
