Restaurant Report Card: January 22, 2018

WSIL -- We check out five area eateries in this week's Restaurant Report Card.

The Jackson County inspector gave 17th Street in Murphysboro an 84. Eight violations were found, one was critical. Five points were taken away because employees were seen in the kitchen putting their hand in their pocket and not washing afterward. Frozen raw beef was being thawed at room temperature which was a two point loss. Excessive water needed to be removed from the bottom of the beer cooler, that was also a two point loss. A week later the inspector returned and all eight violations had been corrected.

Mike's Drive In in West Frankfort earned an 89. The Franklin County inspector noted one critical violation. It was a five point loss cooler was not working properly. The temperature was more than the required 41 degrees. It has since been fixed. The vent hood, side fryers, ice machine and other spots needed to be cleaned better.

The Perry County inspector gave St.Nicholas Brewing Company in Du Quoin a 94. Frozen food wasn't being thawed properly, that was a two point deduction. There were a couple of minor cleaning problems found too.

The second location of 17th Street received a 95. The Williamson County inspector took away two points because the make table door needed to be repaired. A couple of minor cleaning issues were also noted.

Mt. Vernon's Frosty Mug tops the list this week. The Jefferson County inspector took away two points, giving the popular spot a 98.

    WEST FRANKFORT -- After eight years in operation, Morthland College is shutting down, according to a release from a college spokesperson.  This comes following a year of bad news for the school, which included federal investigations, tax liens and hefty fines.
