3 die in tugboat explosion

CALVERT CITY, KY -- Kentucky State Police say Friday's explosion sparked a flash fire and subsequent small fire inside the tug boat.

According to KSP 41 people were on site when the explosion happened, but not all of them were on the tug boat at the time.

Timothy L. Wright, 52, of Calvert City, Kentucky, Jerome A. Smith, 56, of Thibodaux, Louisiana, and Quentin J. Stewart, 41, of Opelousas, Louisiana, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Marshall County Coroner. Autopsies are set for Saturday morning.

Six people went to hospitals with various injuries:

Javier Fuenes, 21, was transported by ambulance to Marshall County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  
Wilson Madrid, 23, was transported by ambulance to Marshall County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  
James Lang was transported by ambulance to Lourdes Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.  
Tyler Wedington was transported by ambulance to Lourdes Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. 
Jimmy Lang was transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt for treatment of serious injuries.  
Billy Counts was transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt for treatment of serious injuries.

KSP continues to investigate what caused the blast.
 

ORIGINAL STORY

CALVERT CITY, KY -- Kentucky State Police are investigating an explosion on the Tennessee River.

It happened around 9:15 on a tugboat docked on Hollinger Road.

Investigators say the blast happened as crews worked on the tugboat.

Three people died and several others went to various hospitals with injuries.

So far--there's no indication of foul play.
