Jefferson County road conditions

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON -- Many of us got some snow Monday. Those in Mt. Vernon saw around two inches of snow fall since Monday night, on top of an already icy ground.

For Kaylin Hulbert, the slick roads in her neighborhood have proved to be difficult to get around on. She slid into a neighbors mailbox, and she wasn't the only one in her family that had trouble driving on the ice and snow.

"My mom wound up in a ditch and was there for 2 hours yesterday," said Hulbert.

The main roads in Jefferson County, like Route 148, are mostly clear. But if you get off the main roads and go down side roads, underneath its a solid sheet of ice.

"People have been driving on them a lot, so the snow kind of packed down," said Hulbert.

Michael McKinnies went out this morning to get materials to protect his outdoor faucet from icing over. While he was on the roads, he said he didnt see any highway department trucks but he believes they're working hard to keep drivers safe.

"After this snow quits and quits blowing around they'll get it all cleaned up and have it all pretty good for school tomorrow," said McKinnies.

But many Mt. Vernon schools have already called off. That's because roads like those in the Hulbert's neighborhood are too difficult for a school bus to get down. She said her country road typically doesn't get salt from the county. It's up to each neighbor to clear their own way.
"They'll get out, they'll throw down salt. Some of them actually have the attachments for their pickups to go around and get it all figured out," said Hulbert.
