Mueller recovers from fifth surgery

ST. LOUIS -- A Johnston City teen recovers from her fifth surgery following a car wreck that almost cost her her arm.

Doctors in St. Louis performed the surgery on Vickie Mueller Thursday. They spent nine hours taking nerves and muscle tissue from her legs to repair her left arm.

Mueller said the surgery went well and she remains in good spirits.

"I'm very optimistic at this point," Mueller said. "Everything's going the way (the doctors) planned it to be and I still have my arm and it's basically completely repaired, we're just now up to the therapy point."

Mueller played football for Johnston City prior to the wreck and she also got the chance to play some basketball this season after the wreck. The team held a mini-Senior Night for her Wednesday.

Mueller said she plans to attend SIU in the fall, where she'll start out as at least a sophomore due to her taking classes at John A. Logan College while finishing up high school.

Mueller said she's still doing homework despite being in the hospital for another week. She'll be back in St. Louis for another surgery to clean up scar tissue, but she's not sure when that will take place.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Rep. Mike Bost (R-Illinois) both nominated her to the Naval Academy recently but due to the injury, Mueller said she's going to hold off on attending school there for another year. She intends to reapply in the fall.
