Local non profit rolls out new memorial for fallen veterans

JEFFERSON CO. -- Founders of a new Mt. Vernon organization helping veterans honor one of their own in a unique way.

The crew from American Veterans Outdoor Adventures unveiled a memorial, you'll soon see on the roads across southern Illinois.

"Well what happened was I got cancer okay, stage 4 throat cancer. The doctor told me I was done and well you're never done till you decide you're done," explained Coomer.

So the Vietnam veteran decided to fight back by getting back to what he loves, the outdoors.

"Filming everything from big bucks to ducks, to turkeys, to armadillos, alligators," added Coomer.

So he joined forces with Troy Leonberger and Daniel Price, creating the nonprofit organization American Veterans Outdoor Adventures helping our nation's heroes heal through hunting.

"It's almost selfish because we get just as much therapy out of this as they do," explained Price.

Honoring those who gave all with a newly wrapped Hummer the organization will use to travel the country and take veterans on hunting trips.

"These are my two buddies that I know who were in my platoon," said Price.

Buddies and sons who will live on through these veterans' new mission.

"One veteran said it saved his life and kept him from putting a gun in his mouth, that's what we're all about we want to help vets heal physically and mentally," explained Leonberger.

Something Wild Bill Coomer has experienced first hand.

"This is even bigger than family to me I mean I love my momma and I love my family more than anything but when you serve with someone you get to know them inside and out," added Coomer.

Leaving these veterans on a mission that lasts a lifetime.

The crew from American Veterans Outdoor Adventures will be at the Hook and Bullet Outdoor Expo this weekend in Mt. Vernon.
