How do superintendents decide to close schools?

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- As people in the region brace for possible ice and snow, administrators at area schools may have to decide whether or not to call off school.

Students at Mt. Vernon High School are hoping for ice and snow, but Superintendent Marilyn Holt said that's not always an easy call and depends largely on the timing of the storm.

"Personally and probably with most superintendents, they like to make the call early and love to have that storm coming in the evening before so that everybody can go to bed knowing hey there's no school tomorrow, but for some reason that's not always the way storms come in," Holt said.

Holt said her biggest concern is the safety of students who ride the bus.

She'll be keeping a close eye on road conditions to determine if it's safe enough for buses to make their runs.
