Jefferson County cashier chases armed crook out of store

JEFFERSON COUNTY -- A Johnston City man is in the Jefferson County jail accused of attempting to rob multiple businesses Friday night in Mt. Vernon, but that suspect got more than he bargained for at one business.

"It is kind of scary when someone comes in and asks for money at gunpoint," explained Times Square Liquors manager Mike Patel.

But that's exactly what happened at Patel's business a little after 10 p.m. Friday.

"It was really surprising to me," added Patel.

Store security cameras show former Marine and current cashier Robert Carroll doing something that other cashiers may not have done.

Carroll pulled a knife on 26-year-old Callie Buchanan, chasing him out of the store.

"He's not afraid of those kinds of things so he took action against him. If I were there I would not have done that, I would have just given the money," added Patel.

Mt. Vernon Assistant Police Chief Trent Page says just minutes before being chased out of Times Square liquor, Buchanan tried to steal money from a safe at Mt. Vernon's Dollar Tree.

"Officers were still investigating the first two incidents when the third call came out," explained Page.

That call came from two Dollar Tree employees who spotted Buchanan at the Mt. Vernon Walmart.

"They called the police department and officers responded and made contact with the subject in the parking lot who was later identified as Callie Buchanan," added Page.

A tip Page calls a crucial part of putting Buchanan behind bars.

"Because we can't be everywhere at all times and obviously we responded quickly and were able to get him into custody which was a good situation for everybody," added Page.

Quick action from police and a cashier, leaving Patel and others in Mt. Vernon able to rest a little easier.

"Usually people don't do that and they just give up and say take whatever you want but he didn't give it," added Patel.

This isn't Buchanan's first run in with police.

He is currently facing charges in Williamson County of robbery, fleeing and eluding Police, and endangering the life of a child.

In that case, he's accused of holding a Marion gas station cashier at gunpoint, then leading police on a high speed chase with an infant in his car.

Buchanan is now being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $75,000 bond.
