'Underground' hit with more than a dozen violations

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Underground Barrel and Grill in Carbondale had more than a dozen violations. The Jackson County inspector gave the spot a 70. There were four critical violations.

Five points were lost because of a problem with food temperatures. Sour cream was found too warm. Five points were also deducted because an unauthorized employee was in the kitchen without a hairnet or hat. That person was also seen handling food without washing their hands. The sanitizer dispenser at the dish washing sink needed to be repaired, which was a four point loss. The final critical violation was also a four point deduction because the hand sink in the kitchen was being blocked. There were also items in the sink that don't belong.

Additional points were taken away because some food items were being stored on the ground. When the inspector returned a week later the problem areas had been corrected.

Agave in Mt. Vernon got an 87 from the Jefferson County inspector. Two critical violations were found. Five points were taken away because Mexican rice was not being stored hot enough. It's supposed to be 135 degrees or warmed and was noted at 95 degrees. Insecticide was found on a shelf with liquor and Windex was being stored near taco shell bowls. That is also a five point deduction. Food handling utensils were not being stored properly. That was a one point deduction as was some food contact surfaces needing to be cleaned better.

Los Amigos in Paducah received a 96. The McCracken County inspector didn't find any critical violations during that check late last year.

Flame Bar and Grill in Carbondale was two points higher with a 98. A couple of minor cleaning problems were noted.

Our top score this week goes to Nate's Bar & Grill in Old Shawneetown. The Gallatin County inspector gave the spot a 99.
