Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas across world

Posted: Updated:

CARTERVILLE -- While some of us celebrated Christmas on December 25, several across the globe celebrated it Sunday.

January 7 marks Orthodox Christmas, with people celebrating from Africa to Europe and throughout the rest of the world, including the United States. That's because Orthodox Christians use a different calendar than the one more commonly accepted in the United States and other parts of the world.

Celebrations tend to begin at midnight on Christmas Eve while others take place Sunday morning. One of the traditions is fasting for several days leading up to Christmas Eve, focusing on prayer and love for others.

To anyone celebrating, Merry Christmas and happy holidays! Or as Habeshans say in Amharic, which is an Ethiopian language, Melkam Gena!
