Authorities investigate fatal hit and run, suspect at large

WASHINGTON CO. – Illinois State Police are looking for a driver involved in a fatal hit and run crash that occurred Friday night on I-64.

Authorities say two vehicles were headed eastbound near milepost 47 at 5:05p.m., when one of the vehicles, described as possibly a black Cadillac STS with dark tinted windows, made a lane change.

Investigators say the Cadillac abruptly returned to the right lane before clearing the second vehicle.

The passenger side of the Cadillac struck the driver’s side of the second vehicle, a 2014 Toyota Avalon, which was carrying three people from Omaha, Nebraska, including two older adults.

The impact forced the Avalon to leave the roadway, where it struck a tree.

Ervin H. Goeden, a 93-year-old passenger in the Avalon, was killed in the crash.

Another passenger, 81-year-old Patricia A. Goeden, suffered major injuries.

The 56-year-old driver of the Avalon, Eugene P. Tomasello, was not injured.

State police say the driver of the Cadillac, which caused the crash, did not stop and was last seen traveling east on I-64.

Authorities say the Cadillac could possibly have silver paint transfer on the middle or rear passenger side.

Illinois State Police District 13 and the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate.

Anyone with information about the crash should call ISP District 13 at 618-542-2171, extension 1202.
