WEST FRANKFORT -- The Night's Shield in West Frankfort introduced its new program named The Children's Crisis Shelter.

The program is a temporary emergency child care shelter that provides short-term care for families who are experiencing severe disruptive crisis such as domestic violence, homelessness and substance abuse among many other things.

"The last eight years, we've been an emergency care facility for DCFS," Executive Director Lindsey Bullman said. "Now, we're on the prevention end where if you can help lower parental stress, then it lowers the number of abuse, neglect and abandonment in the home."

The program is the only one of its kind south of Effingham in Illinois.

The Night's Shied serves children age infant through their 18th birthday.
