Flu outbreak forces hospitals to restrict visitors

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON -- With flu season in full swing and a high amount of cases in southern Illinois, a  pair of hospitals have set up new visitation rules.

SSM Health, which runs Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon and St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia, said visitors with flu-like symptoms should not visit patients, until further notice.

There's also a two-visitor-per-patient rule and officials don't want anyone under the age of 18 to visit at all.

Officials hope the rules will stop the flu from spreading.

These rules are in accordance with the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control and Protection

The hospitals will revert back to their open visitation policy as soon as the influenza threat is abated.

Visitors are encouraged to visit wellness stations inside hospital entrances, which are equipped with hand sanitizer, masks, and tissue.
