Herrin community watch provides rides home on New Year's

Posted: Updated:

HERRIN -- If you plan to celebrate the start of 2018 in Herrin, a group of volunteers wants to make sure you get home safely.

About 20 volunteers from the Herrin-Energy Crime Watch will ring in the new year by providing free rides home to keep drunk and impaired drivers off the streets.

"Operation Safe Streets," in its third year, encourages people to call for a free ride instead of getting behind the wheel after drinking.

"We're just trying to make sure everybody can get home safely and not cause accidents or anything," an organizer said. "Starting the new year, that's a heck of a way to start out if you have a bad night. We're just there to try to keep the streets safe."

Volunteers will give rides home from 10 p.m. New Year's Eve until 3 a.m. New Year's Day.

To request a ride or for more information, you can call Herrin-Energy Community Crime Watch at 618-988-2157.
