McCracken County woman scammed out of $13,000 on Facebook

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY -- A woman is out $13,000 after falling victim to a Facebook scam.

A woman told McCracken County investigators she befriended a man on Facebook.

She said the man, who claimed to be working on an oil rig, asked her to send him money.

He said he wanted to purchase a home in the Kentucky Lake region, the victim says.

The man stated that he needed the victim to send money to a courier, via MoneyGram and Western Union, so that he could send large amounts of money back to her.

This was allegedly to facilitate the purchase of the man's new house, the McCracken County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim told detectives she had never received money from the man as promised and he told her the courier still needed more money.

The victim had already sent approximately $13,000.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department said they see financial scams similar to this on a regular basis.

"We cannot stress to the public enough that it is in your best interest to not send money to people you do not know," the department said in a press release. "The people behind these scams are becoming more savvy all the time, but one thing has always held true, that if something appears to be 'off' it most likely is."

If you believe you are a target of a scam, before you send money or share any personal details, please contact your local law enforcement agency, the department advised.
