Two Murphysboro men face child porn charges

MURPHYSBORO -- Two men face child pornography charges after they were arrested in separate police investigations.

Murphysboro Police Chief Chad Roberts said they first became suspicious of 70-year-old Eric Deutsch after a cyber crime program made an alarming discovery.

"We received a tip from them that their system detected child pornography being downloaded at Deutsch's residence," said Roberts.

After serving a search warrant at Deutsch's house last month, investigators arrested him for a marijuana operation. They said they later found child porn on several electronic devices they seized.

Earlier this week, police made a break in another case and arrested 67-year-old Paul Blaney.

Authorities say Blaney also possessed child pornography and created it in his apartment.

"What he possessed is something he produced. He didn't receive it elsewhere. It's something he produced," said Roberts. "We know this has been going on for a while. We know there have been suspicions in the community for a while."

Roberts said their investigation into Blaney started more than a year ago, but a recent tip from a citizen helped speed things up, making it possible to arrest him.

Investigators are still trying to determine how many children may have been victimized.

"We're still trying to wrap our heads around that. We're still trying to identify. We're still trying to find the full breadth and scope," said Roberts.

He added, "These are difficult cases to make. These are difficult crimes to identify, and the victims are the most vulnerable among us."

Roberts encouraged anyone with information in either of these cases to contact police.
