Spring Garden students participate in cardboard boat regatta

INA -- A middle school in Ina gives a creative science lesson to its eighth graders.

Students in Tim Blair's eighth grade science class at Spring Garden School will hold a cardboard boat regatta later this week.

"My eighth grade is learning about buoyancy and what better what day to learn buoyancy then see if they can get into a boat and if they'll sink or float," Blair said.

Blair said the lesson gives students hands-on experience.

"(They're using) the science so they're expanding their knowledge on an actual object instead of just reading it out of a book," Blair said.

The class is broken up into teams of three students and those three students have to fit inside a cardboard boat, hoping it will float at the pool at Rend Lake College Friday morning.

And the students believe their projects will make the grade

"I'm pretty excited to see who will win. I'm pretty confident," student Asher Russell said.

"It just seems really fun just to get in a boat and race and see who can make it first," student Danae Hughey said. "We're working very hard on ours."

Rend Lake College will have lifeguards at the pool so no worries about safety.

"I can't say they're all going to make it down and back but they're going to surprise themselves," Blair said.

And he hopes they take away a valuable lesson in the process.
