Hospice keeps memories alive with Tree of Life

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- The holiday season can be especially difficult for people who have lost loved ones.

Hospice of Southern Illinois put up their Tree of Life on Sunday at the "The Journey" church and held a special memorial service to celebrate the lives of those who have died.

Christina Mize, a social worker with Hospice, said it helps families grieve and make it through the holidays.

"The holidays are a tough time and a lot of times people try to make the holidays just like it was before when the person was there," Mize said. "You can't do that. You can't make it always the same because that person's not there.'

The ornaments and tree will be taken down from the church and put back up in Hospice's main office in Marion where they will stay through the season.

Organizers stress that the tree is not just for those who have lost family to cancer but any family member who has required Hospice service at the end of life.
