Fire closes Williamson County business

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSON CO. -- With the help of friends and family, Helen Dempsey reopened "Helen's" just over a month ago. Sunday morning, a fire in the back of the Williamson County business closed it down.

Dempsey said the fire could have been a lot worse and they're going to keep looking up.

"There's no one that's hurt and we have a lot of loving people around us and we're going to get over that hurdle," she said.

Firefighters on scene said the fire was well underway when they arrived.

"We were the first engine on scene, and when we pulled up, we had heavy smoke and a good amount of fire coming form the back of the building," said Lake of Egypt Firefighter Brady Crane.

They quickly jumped into action to get the fire under control.

"We got a good knock on the fire and got the place vented really good, did some overhaul and had the fire out. Got a good water supply set up and things went really well," Crane said.

Their quick actions keep employees like Krystal Parks hopeful something can be saved from the business they called home.

"I met these ladies a couple months ago. Since then, they have done nothing but invite me in and show me what family was all about and treated me nothing but the best," said Parks.

Right now, Helen doesn't know what the future holds for her Route 37 business but said many customers have dropped by to offer her support.

"We worked so hard and we've been encouraged by everyone," Dempsey said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the fire marshal has been called in to investigate.
