Kendrick Paper catches fire in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON -- Multiple fire crews responded to a fire at Kendrick Paper Stock Company in Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent said the fire could be seen for miles.

"When we got here, we realized it was the commercial structure," he said. "It was fully involved from front to back."

The building full of recycling materials made a lot of fuel to keep the fire going.

"[There were] bales of cardboard and papers and all kinds of recyclables in this building, also some equipment they use," Sargent said.

It's a fire neighbors nearby say could have been much worse.

"Houses could have been fired up to," neighbor Micah Prayer said. "I just have to thank God that people are okay."

The large size of the building made it hard to get to the back corner where several pieces of equipment caught fire, but for now, the fire remains under control.

Now, the goal is getting the bulk of the fire put down, so it doesn't create so much smoke. It will smolder for a long time, crews said.

Fire crews expect to be at the site into the night, making sure that the paper inside the building doesn't reignite.
