Ending the mental health stigma at John A. Logan College

Posted: Updated:

CARTERVILLE -- John A. Logan College students want to erase the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The college is hosting a week of events this week, including a pledge wall in the cafeteria.

Organizers hope students pledge to fight the stigma and help those dealing with an illness.

"The students wanted to address it with a week of events based on their research on stigma," Adrienne Barkley Giffin, Director of Student Activities said. "They wanted to find out what actions really work to reduce stigma."

"We just want to make people know that it's OK and that you're not any different from anyone else just because you have a mental illness," Bethany Rentfro said. She's a sophomore at John A. and a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, which is organizing the events.

Mental health professionals will host a roundtable discussion Wednesday, followed by a mental health workshop Thursday and a student roundtable discussion on Friday.
