5 deputies laid off in Perry County

Posted: Updated:

PINCKNEYVILLE -- Two full-time deputies and three part-time deputies are being laid off at the Perry County Sheriff's Office.

Perry County Sheriff Steve Bareis cites decreases in department budget, increases in health care costs and operational costs as a few reasons for the decision.

Bareis calls it the perfect storm of events that led up to the loss of staff and resources at the Perry County Jail and Sheriff's office.

It's a decision no boss ever wants to make.

"When you're asked within one week to cut $325,000 out of your budget, there's not a lot of places to go other than personnel," explained Bareis.

But laying off his employees is one Sheriff Bareis says he was forced to make.

"Two full-time positions and three part-time positions," added Bareis.

Other areas of the department are being cut as well, including Bareis who is taking a $6,000 pay cut himself.

"I'm committed to working through this course of history I guess in our county and we will see if things get better," added Bareis.

In order for that to happen, Bareis says the state of Illinois needs to do it's part when it comes to funding and healthcare, and the county has to increase revenue.

"Signs of the times I guess,  I don't know, but we are just going to have to do the best we can do with the resources we've got," added Bareis.

For now it's not much in a department now down 5 deputies and a jailer.

One let go less than a year after he was hired.

"You add the fact that it's the holiday season on top of that and the physical date and years they started and it makes it that much harder," added Bareis.

Bareis tells News 3 the county will do quarterly financial assessments to determine if and when the deputies can be re-hired.
