Local business owners call holidays sales successful

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- Several store owners in Marion consider Small Business Saturday a major success, and one business saw sales double from the same time last year.

"Our business literally increased double for both days so we were very, very excited," said Sheri Donoghue, manager of Silver Collections in Marion. "I saw so many local faces that I knew but a lot of new faces, too."

Donahue said the store opened on Black Friday last year: a fact she said probably contributed to the sales bump this year, but more and more people are making an effort to shop local during the holidays.

"They specifically mentioned they were shopping at all of the small businesses and some people were even following each other around to different small businesses," she said, "so we knew a lot of it had to do with people shopping local and that was so good to see."

Marion Chamber of Commerce Director Dalus Ben Avi agreed

"I talked to several members of the Marion Chamber and every one of them that I contacted had positive things to say about Small Business Saturday," he said.

She said she went out shopping with her daughter.

"We bought all of our gifts local and all of the stores were packed," she said. " All of the staff were well prepared."

The Marion Chamber has joined 16 other groups in a marketing campaign to shop local.

However, Ben Avi said she believes the increased business on the Saturday after Thanksgiving is part of a much larger cultural shift.

"I think it's a mindset," she said. "I think people understand that shopping locally really helps their neighbors and their family and their friends."

And it's a mindset many small business owners hope will continue.
