Recycling centers brace for busiest time of year

Posted: Updated:

CARTERVILLE -- Many have spent the day hunched over computer screens looking for big bargains on this Cyber Monday, and thousands of boxes have already started piling up at Progress Port in Carterville.

For Christmas lover, it's the most wonderful time of the year, but for workers at Progress Port Recycling Center, it's also the busiest time of the year.

General Manager Lori Jones said work really picked up the week before Thanksgiving.

"I think people are cleaning out their houses getting ready for that Thanksgiving dinner and we see a lot of recyclables then," she said.

And with Cyber Monday sales expected to reach record highs, these workers will soon get even busier.

Worker Kayla Gwinn said she sorts through hundreds, if not thousands, of boxes a week during this time of year.

Jones said if it's not Amazon boxes they're sorting, it's boxes that once contained alcohol or food.

"The businesses here in Carterville are stocking their shelves and getting ready for the Christmas rush," Jones said.

She said at Christmas, they get requests for bottles and pallets, so the employees also stay busy helping crafters find the items they need to make gifts with.

Jones said that's another great way to recycle and reuse.

But she said if you're not a crafter, you can still help the environment by dropping off your recyclables at their facility.

"Recycling is so easy," Jones said, "especially like during the day because you just pull up here and our individuals come out and they take your recycling from you and you don't even have to carry it in."

You can drop off your recyclables at the Carterville center on Division all week long. If they're closed, you can leave recyclables in the outside drop off.
