Event looks to find animals a good home

JACKSON CO. -- It might not be a door-buster sale on electronics or appliances but if you're a pet lover, there's a Black Friday deal that will tug at your heartstrings.

Sunni Welch works at St. Francis CARE in Murphysboro.

She said people often pass right by the black cats and dogs at the shelter, but they're working to get them to a good home for the holidays.

"It's [black] such an original color. They want something like a brindle or white is even more, I guess, eye-catching than what a black dog would be and there so many," Welch said.

St. Francis CARE has reduced the cost of adoption on the animals to get them to a good home. The adoption cost of a black dog is 25% less and black cats are just $25 to take home.

Caretaker Dave Lyon said it's well worth the effort in the end.

"We send them to that home with their new family and it's extremely rewarding and it makes what we do worth it every day," Lyon said.

They said the longer the animals are in their care, the harder it is to get them to a good home.

"Over a period of time we can see their personalities change. They become more introverted than extroverted. But as they interact with some people here on a regular basis, you can see their true side," Welch said.

They both say getting the animals to a home is key because what was supposed to just last this weekend, isn't going to end any time soon.

"We're going to do it as long as we can. Getting them out of here is more important than making the money," Welch said.
