SIU basketball celebrates Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE - It’s a Saluki basketball thanksgiving tradition.  Each year coach Barry Hinson and his wife Angie host the Saluki basketball team for a Thanksgiving celebration.

"The players don’t get to go home for Thanksgiving and for college kids, that’s hard to be away from their family on a holiday," Angie Hinson explained.

To alleviate some of the pain of being away from family on the holiday, the Hinsons prepare all the traditional Thanksgiving fixins.

"It takes us one day to buy the groceries and everything," Hinson explained. "Then, I started at nine this morning and finished at six, but Barry helps."

The Salukis enjoyed this year’s feast.

"I think he surprised me with the mac and cheese," added sophomore guard, Aaron Cook.  "I didn’t think it was going to be as good as it was, so I was really impressed."

But they didn’t do as much damage as year’s past.

"[It] Didn’t look like they ate as much last year," said Hinson

While the food was enjoyed, the evening was about more than just the Thanksgiving dishes.

"I think it’s just to get together off the basketball court and not be about basketball 24/7," explained senior guard Tyler Smithpeters.  "I think it’s just a good way to get away from it for a little bit."

"It’s just going to build chemistry," added junior guard Eric McGill.  "We can do it on the court too.  It’s just important to spend quality time with your team."

"It’s always fun hanging with the guys," Cook said.  "Being able to spend time with them is always good team bonding for us on and off the court.  So I think this helps us going forward."

Another successful Saluki basketball Thanksgiving in the books and Coach Hinson and his wife plan on continuing this tradition for years to come.
