SIU tops Illinois-Springfield in home opener

CARBONDALE - The basketball Salukis hosted Illinois-Springfield on Saturday night.  Southern playing in front of a home crowd for the first time this season.

Southern jumped out in front early, opening with an 11-3 run and led by as much as ten in the first half, but the Prairie Stars pulled within four by halftime.

The teams battled close throughout the second half.  Illinois-Springfield took its first lead of the game with a little more than three minutes to play.

But on the next Southern possession, Eric McGill drained a three that gave SIU the lead for good.

Aaron Cook led the way for the Dawgs with a career-high 20 points while McGill put up 13.

Mt. Vernon native Gilwan Nelson suiting up for the Prairie Stars and led all scorers with 24 points.

Southern wins it 69-64.  The Salukis travel to Louisville on Tuesday.
