WSIL and American Red Cross team up for fall blood drive

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Every two seconds in America, another person needs a blood transfusion but only five percent of the population actually donates.

The American Red Cross hopes to collect 250 pints of blood over Friday and Saturday in four locations across southern Illinois for the WSIL Fall Blood Drive.

Brenda Oliver of Carbondale and her husband Doug have been donating blood regularly for years.

"We feel like it's great, for people who are in need and God forbid that one day, we should need it," Brenda Oliver said.

And Doug said he doesn't mind his wife urging him to donate.

"It's just something that's easy to provide for others that may be in need," Doug Oliver said.

Jennifer Freeze with the American Red Cross said they appreciate regular donors like the Olivers, especially around the holidays when they see a decline in donations.

"On top of all of that, more people are traveling so unfortunately there are more accidents, so the need for blood can go up around this time of year as well," Freeze said.

And Freeze said even if you feel like you aren't able to donate, you should come out anyway.

"38 percent of the population is actually old enough and medically eligible to give but only five percent actually do," Freeze said.

And each pint donated can save the lives of up to three people.

The WSIL Fall Blood Drive continues Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The American Red Cross will at the University Mall in Carbondale, the Masonic Lodge in Marion, Times Square Mall in Mt. Vernon and the Harrisburg District Library.
