Ship packages early, postmaster says

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- The few weeks before Christmas is the United State's Postal Service's busiest period of the year, as people pack into post offices to get their gifts shipped and delivered before the holiday.

"It is very busy coming up in holiday season," said Brett Crouse, Postmaster of the Carterville Post Office.

With billions of pieces of mail expected to be delivered by the Postal Service over the next month and a half Crouse says there are some steps you can take to make sure your your mail is delivered on time and unharmed.

First and foremost, Crouse says, mail packages as soon as you can.

"I would not wait," he said. "Always be early to be safe."

He says that backlogs caused by weather and sheer number of packages can cause delays, so being early is imperative.

"We recommend the week before the week before Christmas, just to be safe so you know that it's gong to get to your friends and families by Christmas," Crouse said.

He also says its important to make sure that parcels are well packaged, especially if contents are fragile, to ensure they reach their destination in one piece.

"It's up to the customer to make sure it is packaged well, and then we'll get it to it's destination," Crouse said.

And for those that end up procrastinating on shipping, there are some very important dates to keep in mind.

"[December] 19 for first class packages, the 20th for priority, and then you can go all the way up until Friday the 22nd before Christmas with our priority express and still receive it by Christmas day," Crouse said.
